TEXT: Matthew 27:62-66 "Now on the morrow, which
is the day after the Preparation, the chief priests and the Pharisees
were gathered together unto Pilate, 63 say-ing, Sir, we remember
that that deceiver said while he was yet alive, After three days
I rise again. 64 Command therefore that the sepulchre be made
sure until the third day, lest haply his disciples come and steal
him away, and say unto the people, He is risen from the dead:
and the last error will be worse than the first. 65 Pilate said
unto them, Ye have a guard: go, make it as sure as ye can.
66 So they went, and made the sepulchre sure, sealing the stone,
the guard being with them."
I.INTRODUCTION-- The Rulers of the Jews, determined to keep Jesus
dead after they killed him, tried to "Make it Sure!"
This contingency plan failed, but, It is never wrong, when you
make a plan, to "make it as sure as you can."
II. LESSON--
A. Joash and Elisha.
1. Jehoash, a King of Israel, was wicked. 2 Kings 13:10-11
"In the thirty and seventh year of Joash king of Judah
began Jehoash the son of Jehoahaz to reign over Israel in Samaria,
and reigned sixteen years. 11 And he did that which was evil in
the sight of Jehovah; he departed not from all the sins of Jeroboam
the son of Nebat, wherewith he made Israel to sin; but he walked
therein."
2. Yet, God wanted to help his people, Israel, who were oppressed.
vs. 22-23 "And Hazael king of Syria oppressed Israel
all the days of Jehoahaz. 23 But Jehovah was gracious unto them,
and had compassion on them, and had respect unto them, because
of his covenant with Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob, and would not
destroy them, neither cast he them from his presence as yet."
3. Elisha tried to help Jehoash, but he was not eager enough about
the promised victory. vs. 14-19 "Now Elisha was
fallen sick of his sickness whereof he died: and J(eh)oash the
king of Israel came down unto him, and wept over him, and said,
My father, my father, the chariots of Israel and the horsemen
thereof! 15 And Elisha said unto him, Take bow and arrows; and
he took unto him bow and arrows. 16 And he said to the king of
Israel, Put thy hand upon the bow; and he put his hand upon it.
And Elisha laid his hands upon the king's hands. 17 And he said,
Open the window eastward; and he opened it. Then Elisha said,
Shoot; and he shot. And he said, Jehovah's arrow of victory, even
the arrow of victory over Syria; for thou shalt smite the Syrians
in Aphek, till thou have consumed them. 18 And he said, Take the
arrows; and he took them. And he said unto the king of Israel,
Smite upon the ground; and he smote thrice, and stayed. 19 And
the man of God was wroth with him, and said, Thou shouldest have
smitten five or six times: then hadst thou smitten Syria till
thou hadst consumed it, whereas now thou shalt smite Syria but
thrice."
(The righteousness of Elisha seen in vs. 20-21) "And
Elisha died, and they buried him. Now the bands of the Moabites
invaded the land at the coming in of the year. 21 And it came
to pass, as they were burying a man, that, behold, they spied
a band; and they cast the man into the sepulchre of Elisha: and
as soon as the man touched the bones of Elisha, he revived, and
stood up on his feet."
4. So, victory was given to Joash in correlation with his eagerness.
vs. 25 "And Jehoash the son of Jehoahaz took again
out of the hand of Benhadad the son of Hazael the cities which
he had taken out of the hand of Jehoahaz his father by war. Three
times did Joash smite him, and recovered the cities of Israel."
B. The Ten Virgins. Matthew 25:1-13 "Then shall
the kingdom of heaven be likened unto ten virgins, who took their
lamps, and went forth to meet the bridegroom. 2 And five of them
were foolish, and five were wise. 3 For the foolish, when they
took their lamps, took no oil with them: 4 but the wise took oil
in their vessels with their lamps. 5 Now while the bridegroom
tarried, they all slumbered and slept. 6 But at midnight there
is a cry, Behold, the bridegroom! Come ye forth to meet him. 7
Then all those virgins arose, and trimmed their lamps. 8 And the
foolish said unto the wise, Give us of your oil; for our lamps
are going out. 9 But the wise answered, saying, Peradventure there
will not be enough for us and you: go ye rather to them that sell,
and buy for yourselves. 10 And while they went away to buy, the
bridegroom came; and they that were ready went in with him to
the marriage feast: and the door was shut. 11 Afterward came also
the other virgins, saying, Lord, Lord, open to us. 12 But he answered
and said, Verily I say unto you, I know you not. 13 Watch therefore,
for ye know not the day nor the hour."
1. Five were "wise" and five "foolish."
2.What made the foolish virgins fail in their important mission?
a. No contingency plan.
b. The wise virgins not willing to risk by sharing.
c. The foolish virgins were not "recognized." (were
not "known")
III. APPLICATION--
A. What is your contingency plan?
1. Are we "sure" about your baptism? Acts 19:1ff
2. Have we laid up sufficient treasure in heaven?
3. Have we loved God more than the world? 1 John 2:15-17 "Love
not the world, neither the things that are in the world. If any
man love the world, the love of the Father is not in him. 16 For
all that is in the world, the lust of the flesh and the lust of
the eyes and the vain glory of life, is not of the Father, but
is of the world. 17 And the world passeth away, and the lust thereof:
but he that doeth the will of God abideth for ever."
4. Have we used all our abilities for Christ? Romans 12:1-8
"I beseech you therefore, brethren, by the mercies
of God, to present your bodies a living sacrifice, holy, acceptable
to God, which is your spiritual service. 2 And be not fashioned
according to this world: but be ye transformed by the renewing
of your mind, and ye may prove what is the good and acceptable
and perfect will of God. 3 For I say, through the grace that was
given me, to every man that is among you, not to think of himself
more highly than he ought to think; but to think as to think soberly,
according as God hath dealt to each man a measure of faith. 4
For even as we have many members in one body, and all the members
have not the same office: 5 so we, who are many, are one body
in Christ, and severally members one of another. 6 And having
gifts differing according to the grace that was given to us, whether
prophecy, let us prophesy according to the proportion of our faith;
7 or ministry, let us give ourselves to our ministry; or he that
teacheth, to his teaching; 8 or he that exhorteth, to his exhorting:
he that giveth, let him do it with liberality; he that ruleth,
with diligence; he that showeth mercy, with cheerfulness."
B. Have we "made it as sure as we can?" 2 Peter 1:2-11 "Grace to you and peace be multiplied in the knowledge of God and of Jesus our Lord; 3 seeing that his divine power hath granted unto us all things that pertain unto life and godliness, through the knowledge of him that called us by his own glory and virtue; 4 whereby he hath granted unto us his precious and exceeding great promises; that through these ye may become partakers of the divine nature, having escaped from the corruption that is in that world by lust. 5 Yea, and for this very cause adding on your part all diligence, in your faith supply virtue; and in your virtue knowledge; 6 and in your knowledge self-control; and in your self-control patience; and in your patience godliness; 7 and in your godliness brotherly kindness; and in your brotherly kindness love. 8 For if these things are yours and abound, they make you to be not idle nor unfruitful unto the knowledge of our Lord Jesus Christ. 9 For he that lacketh these things is blind, seeing only what is near, having forgotten the cleansing from his old sins. 10 Wherefore, brethren, give the more diligence to make your calling and election sure: for if ye do these things, ye shall never stumble: 11 for thus shall be richly supplied unto you the entrance into the eternal kingdom of our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ."
