DID JESUS NEED TO TAKE A DALE CARNEGIE COURSE?
- INTRODUCTION-- Dale Carnegie is best known for his book,
entitled, "How to win friends and influence people."
But his suggestions, based on human psychology, call for the
avoiding of offending anyone. Even lying is permitted, in order
to avoid any offense.
- Paul does tell us that he tried to avoid causing occasions
of stumbling, but in a certain set of circumstances. 1
Corinthians 10:23-33 "All things are lawful; but not all
things are expedient. All things are lawful; but not all things
edify. 24 Let no man seek his own, but each his neighbor's good.
25 Whatsoever is sold in the shambles, eat, asking no question
for conscience' sake, 26 for the earth is the Lord's, and the
fulness thereof. 27 If one of them that believe not biddeth you
to a feast, and ye are disposed to go; whatsoever is set before
you, eat, asking no question for conscience' sake. 28 But if
any man say unto you, This hath been offered in sacrifice, eat
not, for his sake that showed it, and for conscience sake: 29
conscience, I say, not thine own, but the other's; for why is
my liberty judged by another conscience? 30 If I partake with
thankfulness, why am I evil spoken of for that for which I give
thanks? 31 Whether therefore ye eat, or drink, or whatsoever
ye do, do all to the glory of God. 32 Give no occasions of stumbling,
either to Jews, or to Greeks, or to the church of God: 33 even
as I also please all men in all things, not seeking mine own
profit, but the profit of the many, that they may be saved."
- But, did Jesus need such a course in social etiquette?
- LESSON--
Jesus, "in whom are all the treasures of wisdom and
knowledge hidden," offended several people during His
ministry on earth.
- His friends.
- He made the "homefolks" angry. Luke 4:24-30
"And he said, Verily I say unto you, No prophet is acceptable
in his own country. 25 But of a truth I say unto you, There were
many widows in Israel in the days of Elijah, when the heaven
was shut up three years and six months, when there came a great
famine over all the land; 26 and unto none of them was Elijah
sent, but only to Zarephath, in the land of Sidon, unto a woman
that was a widow. 27 And there were many lepers in Israel in
the time of Elisha the prophet; and none of them was cleansed,
but only Naaman the Syrian. 28 And they were all filled with
wrath in the synagogue, as they heard these things; 29 and they
rose up, and cast him forth out of the city, and led him unto
the brow of the hill whereon their city was built, that they
might throw him down headlong. 30 But he passing through the
midst of them went his way."
- On another occasion, they were "offended."
Matthew 13:54-58 "And coming into his own country
he taught them in their synagogue, insomuch that they were astonished,
and said, Whence hath this man this wisdom, and these mighty
works? 55 Is not this the carpenter's son? is not his mother
called Mary? and his brethren, James, and Joseph, and Simon,
and Judas? 56 And his sisters, are they not all with us? Whence
then hath this man all these things? 57 And they were offended
in him. But Jesus said unto them, A prophet is not without honor,
save in his own country, and in his own house. 58 And he did
not many mighty works there because of their unbelief."
- He offended the Pharisees. Matthew 15:1-2, 10-14
"1 Then there come to Jesus from Jerusalem Pharisees
and scribes, saying, 2 Why do thy disciples transgress the tradition
of the elders? for they wash not their hands when they eat bread...........10
And he called to him the multitude, and said unto them, Hear,
and understand: 11 Not that which entereth into the mouth defileth
the man; but that which proceedeth out of the mouth, this defileth
the man. 12 Then came the disciples, and said unto him, Knowest
thou that the Pharisees were offended, when they heard this saying?
13 But he answered and said, Every plant which my heavenly Father
planted not, shall be rooted up. 14 Let them alone: they are
blind guides. And if the blind guide the blind, both shall fall
into a pit."
- He turned "friends" into "enemies."
John 8:31-59 "Jesus therefore said to those
Jews that had believed him, If ye abide in my word, then
are ye truly my disciples; 32 and ye shall know the truth, and
the truth shall make you free. 33 They answered unto him, We
are Abraham's seed, and have never yet been in bondage to any
man: how sayest thou, Ye shall be made free? 34 Jesus answered
them, Verily, verily, I say unto you, Every one that committeth
sin is the bondservant of sin. 35 And the bondservant abideth
not in the house for ever: the son abideth for ever. 36 If therefore
the Son shall make you free, ye shall be free indeed. 37 I know
that ye are Abraham's seed: yet ye seek to kill me, because my
word hath not free course in you. 38 I speak the things which
I have seen with my Father: and ye also do the things which ye
heard from your father. 39 They answered and said unto him, Our
father is Abraham. Jesus saith unto them, If ye were Abraham's
children, ye would do the works of Abraham. 40 But now ye seek
to kill me, a man that hath told you the truth, which I heard
from God: this did not Abraham. 41 Ye do the works of your father.
They said unto him, We were not born of fornication; we have
one Father, even God. 42 Jesus said unto them, If God were your
Father, ye would love me: for I came forth and am come from God;
for neither have I come of myself, but he sent me. 43 Why do
ye not understand my speech? Even because ye cannot hear my word.
44 Ye are of your father the devil, and the lusts of your father
it is your will to do. He was a murderer from the beginning,
and standeth not in the truth, because there is no truth in him.
When he speaketh a lie, he speaketh of his own: for he is a liar,
and the father thereof. 45 But because I say the truth, ye believe
me not. 46 Which of you convicteth me of sin? If I say truth,
why do ye not believe me? 47 He that is of God heareth the words
of God: for this cause ye hear them not, because ye are not of
God. 48 The Jews answered and said unto him, Say we not well
that thou art a Samaritan, and hast a demon? 49 Jesus answered,
I have not a demon; but I honor my Father, and ye dishonor me.
50 But I seek not mine own glory: there is one that seeketh and
judgeth. 51 Verily, verily, I say unto you, If a man keep my
word, he shall never see death. 52 The Jews said unto him, Now
we know that thou hast a demon. Abraham died, and the prophets;
and thou sayest, If a man keep my word, he shall never taste
of death. 53 Art thou greater than our father Abraham, who died?
and the prophets died: whom makest thou thyself? 54 Jesus answered,
If I glorify myself, my glory is nothing: it is my Father that
glorifieth me; of whom ye say, that he is your God; 55 and ye
have not known him: but I know him; and if I should say, I know
him not, I shall be like unto you, a liar: but I know him, and
keep his word. 56 Your father Abraham rejoiced to see my day;
and he saw it, and was glad. 57 The Jews therefore said unto
him, Thou art not yet fifty years old, and hast thou seen Abraham?
58 Jesus said unto them, Verily, verily, I say unto you, Before
Abraham was born, I am. 59 They took up stones therefore to
cast at him: but Jesus hid himself, and went out of the temple."
But, even if Jesus offended others, are we to follow His
example?
- Matthew 18:15 "And if thy brother sin against
thee, go, show him his fault between thee and him alone: if he
hear thee, thou hast gained thy brother."
- 2 Timothy 4:1-3 "I charge thee in the sight
of God, and of Christ Jesus, who shall judge the living and the
dead, and by his appearing and his kingdom: 2 preach the word;
be urgent in season, out of season; reprove, rebuke, exhort,
with all longsuffering and teaching. 3 For the time will come
when they will not endure the sound doctrine; but, having itching
ears, will heap to themselves teachers after their own lusts."
- Titus 3:10 "A factious man after a first and
second admonition refuse."
- 1 Timothy 5:19-20 "Against an elder receive
not an accusation, except at the mouth of two or three witnesses.
20 Them that sin reprove in the sight of all, that the rest also
may be in fear."
- APPLICATION-- Those who love the souls of men, will tell
them the truth, even if it angers them. Paul "spanked"
the Galatians in this way. Galatians 4:8-20 "Howbeit
at that time, not knowing God, ye were in bondage to them that
by nature are no gods: 9 but now that ye have come to know God,
or rather to be known by God, how turn ye back again to the weak
and beggarly rudiments, whereunto ye desire to be in bondage
over again? 10 Ye observe days, and months, and seasons, and
years. 11 I am afraid of you, lest by any means I have bestowed
labor upon you in vain. 12 I beseech you, brethren, become as
I am, for I also am become as ye are. Ye did me no wrong: 13
but ye know that because of an infirmity of the flesh I preached
the gospel unto you the first time: 14 and that which was a temptation
to you in my flesh ye despised not, nor rejected; but ye received
me as an angel of God, even as Christ Jesus. 15 Where then is
that gratulation of yourselves? for I bear you witness, that,
if possible, ye would have plucked out your eyes and given them
to me. 16 So then am I become your enemy, by telling you the
truth? 17 They zealously seek you in no good way; nay, they
desire to shut you out, that ye may seek them. 18 But it is good
to be zealously sought in a good matter at all times, and not
only when I am present with you. 19 My little children, of whom
I am again in travail until Christ be formed in you-- 20 but
I could wish to be present with you now, and to change my tone;
for I am perplexed about you."
