I. INTRODUCTION--
A. "Why slew he him?" 1 John 3:10-12 "In this the children of God are manifest, and the
children of the devil: whosoever doeth not righteousness is not of God, neither he that
loveth not his brother. 11 For this is the message which ye heard from the beginning,
that we should love one another: 12 not as Cain was of the evil one, and slew his brother.
And wherefore slew he him? Because his works were evil, and his brother's righteous."
1.See also Heb. 11:4. "By faith Abel offered unto God a more excellent sacrifice than
Cain, through which he had witness borne to him that he was righteous, God bearing
witness in respect of his gifts: and through it he being dead yet speaketh."
2.God's answer to Cain reveals His indignation against the callousness which
led to the violence of selfishness (seen in his jealousy). Gen. 4:10-12 (above)
B.All shades of brotherly sentiment (or the lack of it) are seen in the story of
Joseph and his brothers.
1.Their hatred led them to treat Joseph shamefully. Gen. 37:18-27 "And they
saw him afar off, and before he came near unto them, they conspired against him to
slay him. 19 And they said one to another, Behold, this dreamer cometh. 20 Come
now therefore, and let us slay him, and cast him into one of the pits, and we will say,
An evil beast hath devoured him: and we shall see what will become of his dreams. 21
And Reuben heard it, and delivered him out of their hand, and said, Let us not take
his life. 22 And Reuben said unto them, Shed no blood; cast him into this pit that is
in the wilderness, but lay no hand upon him: that he might deliver him out of their
hand, to restore him to his father. 23 And it came to pass, when Joseph was come
unto his brethren, that they stripped Joseph of his coat, the coat of many colors that
was on him; 24 and they took him, and cast him into the pit: and the pit was empty,
there was no water in it. 25 And they sat down to eat bread: and they lifted up their
eyes and looked, and, behold, a caravan of Ishmaelites was coming from Gilead, with
their camels bearing spicery and balm and myrrh, going to carry it down to Egypt.
26 And Judah said unto his brethren, What profit is it if we slay our brother and
conceal his blood? 27 Come, and let us sell him to the Ish-maelites, and let not our
hand be upon him; for he is our brother, our flesh. And his brethren hearkened unto
him."
2.They all later regretted their action, when they saw the problem they faced.
Gen. 42:21-22 "And they said one to another, We are verily guilty concerning our
brother, in that we saw the distress of his soul, when he besought us, and we would
not hear; therefore is this distress come upon us. 22 And Reuben answered them,
saying, Spake I not unto you, saying, Do not sin against the child; and ye would not
hear? therefore also, behold, his blood is required." (Judah later became a "surety"
for Benjamin.)
II. LESSON--
A.We read that the "shepherds" of the flock are responsible for the care of the "flock."
Acts 20:28 "Take heed unto yourselves, and to all the flock, in which the Holy Spirit hath
made you bishops, to feed the church of the Lord which he purchased with his own
blood." (Compare 1 Peter 5:1-3, "The elders among you I exhort, who am a fellow
elder, and a witness of the sufferings of Christ, who am also a partaker of the glory that
shall be revealed: 2 Tend the flock of God which is among you, exercising the oversight,
not of constraint, but willingly, according to the will of God; nor yet for filthy lucre, but
of a ready mind; 3 neither as lording it over the charge allotted to you, but making
yourselves ensamples to the flock.")
1.In Old Testament times, God held the Jewish "shepherds" accountable for the
sheep (though He worked for their salvation beyond the efforts of the
hepherds). Ezek. 34:1-16 "And the word of Jehovah came unto me, saying, 2 Son of
man, prophesy against the shepherds of Israel, prophesy, and say unto them, even to
the shepherds, Thus saith the Lord Jehovah: Woe unto the shepherds of Israel that do
feed themselves! should not the shepherds feed the sheep? 3 Ye eat the fat, and ye
clothe you with the wool, ye kill the fatlings; but ye feed not the sheep. 4 The diseased
have ye not strengthened, neither have ye healed that which was sick, neither have ye
bound up that which was broken, neither have ye brought back that which was
driven away, neither have ye sought that which was lost; but with force and with
rigor have ye ruled over them. 5 And they were scattered, because there was no
shepherd; and they became food to all the beasts of the field, and were scattered. 6 My
sheep wandered through all the mountains, and upon every high hill: yea, my sheep
were scattered upon all the face of the earth; and there was none that did search or
seek after them. 7 Therefore, ye shepherds, hear the word of Jehovah: 8 As I live, saith
the Lord Jehovah, surely forasmuch as my sheep became a prey, and my sheep became
food to all the beasts of the field, because there was no shepherd, neither did my
shepherds search for my sheep, but the shepherds fed themselves, and fed not my
sheep; 9 therefore, ye shepherds, hear the word of Jehovah: 10 Thus saith the Lord
Jehovah: Behold, I am against the shepherds; and I will require my sheep at their
hand, and cause them to cease from feeding the sheep; neither shall the shepherds
feed themselves any more; and I will deliver my sheep from their mouth, that they
may not be food for them. 11 For thus saith the Lord Jehovah: Behold, I myself, even I,
will search for my sheep, and will seek them out. 12 As a shepherd seeketh out his
flock in the day that he is among his sheep that are scattered abroad, so will I seek out
my sheep; and I will deliver them out of all places whither they have been scattered in
the cloudy and dark day. 13 And I will bring them out from the peoples, and gather
them from the countries, and will bring them into their own land; and I will feed
them upon the mountains of Israel, by the watercourses, and in all the inhabited
places of the country. 14 I will feed them with good pasture; and upon the mountains
of the height of Israel shall their fold be: there shall they lie down in a good fold; and
on fat pasture shall they feed upon the mountains of Israel. 15 I myself will be the
shepherd of my sheep, and I will cause them to lie down, saith the Lord Jehovah. 16 I
will seek that which was lost, and will bring back that which was driven away, and
will bind up that which was broken, and will strengthen that which was sick: but the
fat and the strong I will destroy; I will feed them in justice."
2.But, God also "judged between sheep and sheep." vs. 20-24 "Therefore thus
saith the Lord Jehovah unto them: Behold, I, even I, will judge between the fat sheep
and the lean sheep. 21 Because ye thrust with side and with shoulder, and push all
the diseased with your horns, till ye have scattered them abroad; 22 therefore will I
save my flock, and they shall no more be a prey; and I will judge between sheep and
sheep. 23 And I will set up one shepherd over them, and he shall feed them, even my
servant David; he shall feed them, and he shall be their shepherd. 24 And I, Jehovah,
will be their God, and my servant David prince among them; I, Jehovah, have spoken
it."
B. All are to bear their responsibility.
1.Jesus, as the "good shepherd.," bears His responsibility toward the sheep.
John 10:14-16 "I am the good shepherd; and I know mine own, and mine own know
me, 15 even as the Father knoweth me, and I know the Father; and I lay down my life
for the sheep. 16 And other sheep I have, which are not of this fold: them also I must
bring, and they shall hear my voice: and they shall become one flock, one shepherd."
(Compare 1 Peter 2:25 "For ye were going astray like sheep; but are now returned
unto the Shepherd and Bishop of your souls.")
2. As already discussed, Elders have a share in this work (Acts 20, 1 Pet. 5)
3. But, "sheep" must also care for "sheep." Philippians 2:1-18 "If there is therefore
any exhortation in Christ, if any consolation of love, if any fellowship of the Spirit, if
any tender mercies and compassions, 2 make full my joy, that ye be of the same mind,
having the same love, being of one accord, of one mind; 3 doing nothing through
faction or through vainglory, but in lowliness of mind each counting other better
than himself; 4 not looking each of you to his own things, but each of you also to the
things of others. 5 Have this mind in you, which was also in Christ Jesus: 6 who,
existing in the form of God, counted not the being on an equality with God a thing to
be grasped, 7 but emptied himself, taking the form of a servant, being made in the
likeness of men; 8 and being found in fashion as a man, he humbled himself, becoming
obedient even unto death, yea, the death of the cross. 9 Wherefore also God highly
exalted him, and gave unto him the name which is above every name; 10 that in the
name of Jesus every knee should bow, of things in heaven and things on earth and
things under the earth, 11 and that every tongue should confess that Jesus Christ is
Lord, to the glory of God the Father. 12 So then, my beloved, even as ye have always
obeyed, not as in my presence only, but now much more in my absence, work out
your own salvation with fear and trembling; 13 for it is God who worketh in you both
to will and to work, for his good pleasure. 14 Do all things without murmurings and
questionings: 15 that ye may become blameless and harmless, children of God
without blemish in the midst of a crooked and perverse generation, among whom ye
are seen as lights in the world, 16 holding forth the word of life; that I may have
whereof to glory in the day of Christ, that I did not run in vain neither labor in vain.
17 Yea, and if I am offered upon the sacrifice and service of your faith, I joy, and
rejoice with you all: 18 and in the same manner do ye also joy, and rejoice with me."
a. There is a difference at times in filial loyalty.
(1) Andrew FIRST sought his brother, Peter. John 1:35-42 "Again on the
morrow John was standing, and two of his disciples; 36 and he looked upon
Jesus as he walked, and saith, Behold, the Lamb of God! 37 And the two
disciples heard him speak, and they followed Jesus. 38 And Jesus turned, and
beheld them following, and saith unto them, What seek ye? And they said
unto him, Rabbi (which is to say, being interpreted, Teacher), where abideth
thou? 39 He saith unto them, Come, and ye shall see. They came therefore and
saw where he abode; and they abode with him that day: it was about the tenth
hour. 40 One of the two that heard John speak, and followed him, was
Andrew, Simon Peter's brother. 41 He findeth first his own brother Simon,
and saith unto him, We have found the Messiah (which is, being interpreted,
Christ). 42 He brought him unto Jesus. Jesus looked upon him, and said,
Thou art Simon the son of John: thou shalt be called Cephas (which is by
interpretation, Peter)."
(2)But some have the "elder brother" view. Luke 15:25-32 "Now his elder
son was in the field: and as he came and drew nigh to the house, he heard
music and dancing. 26 And he called to him one of the servants, and inquired
what these things might be. 27 And he said unto him, Thy brother is come;
and thy father hath killed the fatted calf, because he hath received him safe and
sound. 28 But he was angry, and would not go in: and his father came out,
and entreated him. 29 But he answered and said to his father, Lo, these many
years do I serve thee, and I never transgressed a commandment of thine; and
yet thou never gavest me a kid, that I might make merry with my friends: 30
but when this thy son came, who hath devoured thy living with harlots, thou
killedst for him the fatted calf. 31 And he said unto him, Son, thou art ever
with me, and all that is mine is thine. 32 But it was meet to make merry and
be glad: for this thy brother was dead, and is alive again; and was lost, and is
found."
b.We have to learn to view the worth of our brother in the same light that
Jesus does. Hebrews 2:11 "For both he that sanctifieth and they that are sanctified
are all of one: for which cause he is not ashamed to call them brethren."
III.APPLICATION-- Selfishness must not hinder the "keeping" of our brothers (and sisters).
A. We must love the brother.
1. Romans 12:10 "In love of the brethren be tenderly affectioned one to another; in
honor preferring one another;"
2.1 Thessalonians 4:9 "But concerning love of the brethren ye have no need that one
write unto you: for ye yourselves are taught of God to love one another;"
3.Hebrews 13:1 "Let love of the brethren continue."
4.1 John 3:14-16 "We know that we have passed out of death into life, because we love
the brethren. He that loveth not abideth in death. 15 Whosoever hateth his brother is
a murderer: and ye know that no murderer hath eternal life abiding in him. 16
Hereby know we love, because he laid down his life for us: and we ought to lay down
our lives for the brethren."
B. We must not "wound the conscience" of the brother. 1 Corinthians 8:8-13 "But
food will not commend us to God: neither, if we eat not, are we the worse; nor, if we eat,
are we the better. 9 But take heed lest by any means this liberty of yours become a
stumblingblock to the weak. 10 For if a man see thee who hast knowledge sitting at meat
in an idol's temple, will not his conscience, if he is weak, be emboldened to eat things
sacrificed to idols? 11 For through thy knowledge he that is weak perisheth, the brother
for whose sake Christ died. 12 And thus, sinning against the brethren, and wounding
their conscience when it is weak, ye sin against Christ. 13 Wherefore, if meat causeth my
brother to stumble, I will eat no flesh for evermore, that I cause not my brother to
stumble."
C. We must not "speak against" the brother. James 4:11-12, 5:9 "Speak not one against
another, brethren. He that speaketh against a brother, or judgeth his brother, speaketh
against the law, and judgeth the law: but if thou judgest the law, thou art not a doer of
the law, but a judge. 12 One only is the lawgiver and judge, even he who is able to save
and to destroy: but who art thou that judgest thy neighbor?"..........(5:9) "Murmur not,
brethren, one against another, that ye be not judged: behold, the judge standeth before
the doors."
D. We must "take heed" to the brother's spiritual needs. Hebrews 3:12-13 "Take heed,
brethren, lest haply there shall be in any one of you an evil heart of unbelief, in falling
away from the living God: 13 but exhort one another day by day, so long as it is called
To-day; lest any one of you be hardened by the deceitfulness of sin:"
E. We must "teach" the brother.
1.Colossians 3:16 "Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly; in all wisdom teaching
and admonishing one another with psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing
with grace in your hearts unto God."
2.1 Timothy 4:10-16 "For to this end we labor and strive, because we have our hope
set on the living God, who is the Saviour of all men, specially of them that believe. 11
These things command and teach. 12 Let no man despise thy youth; but be thou an
ensample to them that believe, in word, in manner of life, in love, in faith, in purity.
13 Till I come, give heed to reading, to exhortation, to teaching. 14 Neglect not the
gift that is in thee, which was given thee by prophecy, with the laying on of the hands
of the presbytery. 15 Be diligent in these things; give thyself wholly to them; that thy
progress may be manifest unto all. 16 Take heed to thyself, and to thy teaching.
Continue in these things; for in doing this thou shalt save both thyself and them that
hear thee."
3.2 Timothy 2:2 "And the things which thou hast heard from me among many
witnesses, the same commit thou to faithful men, who shall be able to teach others
also."
F. We must "rebuke" the brother when he sins. Luke 17:3 "Take heed to yourselves: if
thy brother sin, rebuke him; and if he repent, forgive him."
G. We must "convert" the brother. James 5:19-20 "My brethren, if any among you err
from the truth, and one convert him; 20 let him know, that he who converteth a sinner
from the error of his way shall save a soul from death, and shall cover a multitude of
sins."
H. We must "restore" the brother. Galatians 6:1 "Brethren, even if a man be overtaken
in any trespass, ye who are spiritual, restore such a one in a spirit of gentleness; looking
to thyself, lest thou also be tempted."
I. We must "relieve" the brother. 1 John 3:17-18 "But whoso hath the world's goods,
and beholdeth his brother in need, and shutteth up his compassion from him, how doth
the love of God abide in him? 18 My Little children, let us not love in word, neither with
the tongue; but in deed and truth."
J. We must "serve" the brother.
1.1 Peter 5:5 "Likewise, ye younger, be subject unto the elder. Yea, all of you gird
yourselves with humility, to serve one another: for God resisteth the proud, but
giveth grace to the humble."
2.Galatians 5:13 "For ye, brethren, were called for freedom; only use not your
freedom for an occasion to the flesh, but through love be servants one to another."
APPEAL-- 1 Thessalonians 5:14-15 "And we exhort you, brethren, admonish the
disorderly, encourage the fainthearted, support the weak, be longsuffering toward all.
15 See that none render unto any one evil for evil; but always follow after that which is
good, one toward another, and toward all."
