THE ORDERING OF THE CHILD
- INTRODUCTION-- When a new child is born among members of the church, we
rejoice with the parents, but we must not forget the "ordering of the child."
- To the Parents, their children are special.
- This is especially true with the children of Christian parents. Psalms 127:3-5 3 "Lo,
children are a heritage of Jehovah; And the fruit of the womb is his reward. 4 As arrows
in the hand of a mighty man, So are the children of youth. 5 Happy is the man that hath
his quiver full of them: They shall not be put to shame, When they speak with their
enemies in the gate."
- With these thoughts in mind, it is fitting to take a lesson from the Bible account
of the birth of a special person.
- LESSON--
- We find our event in the book of Judges.
- The general history of this period is one of "ups and down," as stated in
Judges 2:11-19 "And the children of Israel did that which was evil in the sight of
Jehovah, and served the Baalim; 12 and they forsook Jehovah, the God of their fathers,
who brought them out of the land of Egypt, and followed other gods, of the gods of the
peoples that were round about them, and bowed themselves down unto them: and
they provoked Jehovah to anger. 13 And they forsook Jehovah, and served Baal and
the Ashtaroth. 14 And the anger of Jehovah was kindled against Israel, and he
delivered them into the hands of spoilers that despoiled them; and he sold them into
the hands of their enemies round about, so that they could not any longer stand
before their enemies. 15 Whithersoever they went out, the hand of Jehovah was
against them for evil, as Jehovah had spoken, and as Jehovah had sworn unto them:
and they were sore distressed. 16 And Jehovah raised up judges, who saved them out
of the hand of those that despoiled them. 17 And yet they hearkened not unto their
judges; for they played the harlot after other gods, and bowed themselves down unto
them: they turned aside quickly out of the way wherein their fathers walked, obeying
the commandments of Jehovah; but they did not so. 18 And when Jehovah raised
them up judges, then Jehovah was with the judge, and saved them out of the hand of
their enemies all the days of the judge: for it repented Jehovah because of their
groaning by reason of them that oppressed them and vexed them. 19 But it came to
pass, when the judge was dead, that they turned back, and dealt more corruptly than
their fathers, in following other gods to serve them, and to bow down unto them; they
ceased not from their doings, nor from their stubborn way."
- Israel was in one of those "low" periods, in Judges 13:1 "And the children of
Israel again did that which was evil in the sight of Jehovah; and Jehovah delivered
them into the hand of the Philistines forty years."
- Manoah and his wife (no name given) were privileged to become the parents of
one of the famous judges of Israel.
- An angel announced the birth first to the wife. Judges 13:2-5 "And there was a
certain man of Zorah, of the family of the Danites, whose name was Manoah; and his
wife was barren, and bare not. 3 And the angel of Jehovah appeared unto the woman,
and said unto her, Behold now, thou art barren, and bearest not; but thou shalt
conceive, and bear a son. 4 Now therefore beware, I pray thee, and drink no wine nor
strong drink, and eat not any unclean thing: 5 for, lo, thou shalt conceive, and bear a
son; and no razor shall come upon his head; for the child shall be a Nazirite unto God
from the womb: and he shall begin to save Israel out of the hand of the Philistines."
- Manoah asked God to let the "Man" (angel) re-appear, and to teach them
about the child. Judges 13:6-8 "Then the woman came and told her husband,
saying, A man of God came unto me, and his countenance was like the countenance
of the angel of God, very terrible; and I asked him not whence he was, neither told he
me his name: 7 but he said unto me, Behold, thou shalt conceive, and bear a son; and
now drink no wine nor strong drink, and eat not any unclean thing; for the child
shall be a Nazirite unto God from the womb to the day of his death. 8 Then Manoah
entreated Jehovah, and said, Oh, Lord, I pray thee, let the man of God whom thou
didst send come again unto us, and teach us what we shall do unto the child that
shall be born."
- Manoah receives that instruction on the second appearance. Judges13:9-25
"And God hearkened to the voice of Manoah; and the angel of God came again unto
the woman as she sat in the field: but Manoah her husband was not with her. 10 And
the woman made haste, and ran, and told her husband, and said unto him, Behold,
the man hath appeared unto me, that came unto me the other day. 11 And Manoah
arose, and went after his wife, and came to the man, and said unto him, Art thou the
man that spakest unto the woman? And he said, I am. 12 And Manoah said, Now let
thy words come to pass: what shall be the ordering of the child, and how shall we do
unto him? 13 And the angel of Jehovah said unto Manoah, Of all that I said unto the
woman let her beware. 14 She may not eat of anything that cometh of the vine,
neither let her drink wine or strong drink, nor eat any unclean thing; all that I
commanded her let her observe. 15 And Manoah said unto the angel of Jehovah, I
pray thee, let us detain thee, that we may make ready a kid for thee. 16 And the angel
of Jehovah said unto Manoah, Though thou detain me, I will not eat of thy bread; and
if thou wilt make ready a burnt-offering, thou must offer it unto Jehovah. For Manoah
knew not that he was the angel of Jehovah. 17 And Manoah said unto the angel of
Jehovah, What is thy name, that, when thy words come to pass, we may do thee
honor? 18 And the angel of Jehovah said unto him, Wherefore askest thou after my
name, seeing it is wonderful? 19 So Manoah took the kid with the meal-offering, and
offered it upon the rock unto Jehovah: and the angel did wondrously, and Manoah
and his wife looked on. 20 For it came to pass, when the flame went up toward heaven
from off the altar, that the angel of Jehovah ascended in the flame of the altar: and
Manoah and his wife looked on; and they fell on their faces to the ground. 21 But the
angel of Jehovah did no more appear to Manoah or to his wife. Then Manoah knew
that he was the angel of Jehovah. 22 And Manoah said unto his wife, We shall surely
die, because we have seen God. 23 But his wife said unto him, If Jehovah were
pleased to kill us, he would not have received a burnt-offering and a meal-offering at
our hand, neither would he have showed us all these things, nor would at this time
have told such things as these. 24 And the woman bare a son, and called his name
Samson: and the child grew, and Jehovah blessed him. 25 And the Spirit of Jehovah
began to move him in Mahaneh-dan, between Zorah and Eshtaol."
- The concern of Manoah should be ours, today, in raising children.
- The Special child--Samson.
- The Nazarite vow was imposed on him at birth. (The Nazarite Law is
revealed in Numbers 6:1-8). "And Jehovah spake unto Moses, saying, 2 Speak unto
the children of Israel, and say unto them, When either man or woman shall make a
special vow, the vow of a Nazirite, to separate himself unto Jehovah, 3 he shall
separate himself from wine and strong drink; he shall drink no vinegar of wine, or
vinegar of strong drink, neither shall he drink any juice of grapes, nor eat fresh
grapes or dried. 4 All the days of his separation shall he eat nothing that is made of
the grape-vine, from the kernels even to the husk. 5 All the days of his vow of
separation there shall no razor come upon his head: until the days be fulfilled, in
which he separateth himself unto Jehovah, he shall be holy; he shall let the locks of the
hair of his head grow long. 6 All the days that he separateth himself unto Jehovah he
shall not come near to a dead body. 7 He shall not make himself unclean for his father,
or for his mother, for his brother, or for his sister, when they die; because his
separation unto God is upon his head. 8 All the days of his separation he is holy unto
Jehovah."
- Other famous Nazirites whose vows were imposed at birth were Samuel (1
Samuel 1:11), and John the Baptist (Luke 1:13-15).
- Paul took the vow on a temporary basis. Acts 18:18 "And Paul, having tarried
after this yet many days, took his leave of the brethren, and sailed thence for Syria,
and with him Priscilla and Aquila: having shorn his head in Cenchreae; for he had a
vow."
- APLICATION--
- Young parents, and young grandparents, the child in your arms is "special."
- The child is not a Nazirite, but should be separated unto God, anyway.
- It is privileged to be born to servants of God, whom they imitate.
- It is privileged to be channeled in the "chastening and admonition of the
Lord." ("The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom.")
- He/she is separated from worldly influences by concerned godly parents,
and brethren. (Our love for them is requited by obedience.)
- Possessing a soul more precious than the wealth of all the world, they
need to learn who they are.
- The "ordering of the child" is your responsibility, so you must guide it by the
teaching of the Lord.
- The careless parent who lets his child drift into evil, or who fails to emphasize
spiritual values above the material, will fail in the task of Parenthood.
