GEMS OF WISDOM FROM UNINSPIRED MEN
- INTRODUCTION-- Though all of the Bible is inspired (2 Timothy 3:16-17), not every
word recorded in it comes from inspired men. However, such men have often (by
experience, or through native wisdom) expressed some divine truths.
- LESSON--
- Nebuchadnezzar-- Daniel 4:34-37 "And at the end of the days I, Nebuchad-nezzar,
lifted up mine eyes unto heaven, and mine understanding returned unto me, and I
blessed the Most High, and I praised and honored him that liveth for ever; for his
dominion is an everlasting dominion, and his kingdom from generation to generation. 35
And all the inhabitants of the earth are reputed as nothing; and he doeth according to his
will in the army of heaven, and among the inhabitants of the earth; and none can stay his
hand, or say unto him, What doest thou? 36 At the same time mine understanding
returned unto me; and for the glory of my kingdom, my majesty and brightness returned
unto me; and my counsellors and my lords sought unto me; and I was established in my
kingdom, and excellent greatness was added unto me. 37 Now I, Nebuchadnezzar, praise
and extol and honor the King of heaven; for all his works are truth, and his ways justice;
and those that walk in pride he is able to abase."
- Nebuchadnezzar was a proud and haughty king, and God brought him low
to teach him a lesson in humility. Daniel 4:28-33 "All this came upon the king
Nebuchadnezzar. 29 At the end of twelve months he was walking in the royal palace
of Babylon. 30 The king spake and said, Is not this great Babylon, which I have built
for the royal dwelling-place, by the might of my power and for the glory of my
majesty? 31 While the word was in the king's mouth, there fell a voice from heaven,
saying, O king Nebuchad-nezzar, to thee it is spoken: The kingdom is departed from
thee: 32 and thou shalt be driven from men; and thy dwelling shall be with the beasts
of the field; thou shalt be made to eat grass as oxen; and seven times shall pass over
thee; until thou know that the Most High ruleth in the kingdom of men, and giveth it
to whomsoever he will. 33 The same hour was the thing fulfilled upon
Nebuchadnezzar: and he was driven from men, and did eat grass as oxen, and his
body was wet with the dew of heaven, till his hair was grown like eagles' feathers,
and his nails like birds' claws."
- Hannah, the mother of Samuel, confirmed this kind of action by God, by
inspiration, in 1 Samuel 2:3-4. "Talk no more so exceeding proudly; Let not
arrogancy come out of your mouth; For Jehovah is a God of knowledge, And by him
actions are weighed. 4 The bows of the mighty men are broken; And they that
stumbled are girded with strength."
3. Mary, the mother of Jesus said of God in her hymn of praise, "He hath put
down princes from their thrones, And hath exalted them of low degree." Luke 1:52
4.Jesus taught this divine lesson in Luke 14:11. "For everyone that exalteth himself
shall be humbled; and he that humbleth himself shall be exalted."
- The Man Born Blind-- John 9:24-33 "So they called a second time the man that was
blind, and said unto him, Give glory to God: we know that this man is a sinner. 25 He
therefore answered, Whether he is a sinner, I know not: one thing I know, that, whereas
I was blind, now I see. 26 They said therefore unto him, What did he to thee? How
opened he thine eyes? 27 He answered them, I told you even now, and ye did not hear;
wherefore would ye hear it again? would ye also become his disciples? 28 And they
reviled him, and said, Thou art his disciple; but we are disciples of Moses. 29 We know
that God hath spoken unto Moses: but as for this man, we know not whence he is. 30 The
man answered and said unto them, Why, herein is the marvel, that ye know not whence
he is, and yet he opened mine eyes. 31 We know that God heareth not sinners: but if any
man be a worshipper of God, and do his will, him he heareth. 32 Since the world began it
was never heard that any one opened the eyes of a man born blind. 33 If this man were
not from God, he could do nothing."
- With Jesus' help, the blind man could now "see," in more ways than one, but
the Jews became "blind" to clear evidence that Jesus was the Christ.
- The blind man first said, "He is a prophet" (Vs. 17), but later testimony
convinced him that Jesus is the Son of God (Vs. 35-38, "Jesus heard that they
had cast him out (of the synagogue); and finding him, he said, Dost thou believe on
the Son of God? 36 He answered and said, And who is he, Lord, that I may believe on
him? 37 Jesus said unto him, Thou hast both seen him, and he it is that speaketh with
thee. 38 And he said, Lord, I believe. And he worshipped him.")
- This was the purpose of John's Gospel. John 20:30-31 "Many other signs
therefore did Jesus in the presence of the disciples, which are not written in this book:
31 but these are written, that ye may believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God;
and that believing ye may have life in his name."
- Jothan, son of Gideon-- Judges 9:1-21 "And when they told it to Jotham, he went
and stood on the top of mount Gerizim, and lifted up his voice, and cried, and said unto
them, Hearken unto me, ye men of Shechem, that God may hearken unto you. 8 The trees
went forth on a time to anoint a king over them; and they said unto the olive-tree, Reign
thou over us. 9 But the olive-tree said unto them, Should I leave my fatness, wherewith
by me they honor God and man, and go to wave to and fro over the trees? 10 And the
trees said to the fig-tree, Come thou, and reign over us. 11 But the fig-tree said unto
them, Should I leave my sweetness, and my good fruit, and go to wave to and fro over the
trees? 12 And the trees said unto the vine, Come thou, and reign over us. 13 And the
vine said unto them, Should I leave my new wine, which cheereth God and man, and go
to wave to and fro over the trees? 14 Then said all the trees unto the bramble, Come
thou, and reign over us. 15 And the bramble said unto the trees, If in truth ye anoint me
king over you, then come and take refuge in my shade; and if not, let fire come out of the
bramble, and devour the cedars of Lebanon. 16 Now therefore, if ye have dealt truly and
uprightly, in that ye have made Abimelech king, and if ye have dealt well with Jerubbaal
and his house, and have done unto him according to the deserving of his hands 17 (for
my father fought for you, and adven-tured his life, and delivered you out of the hand of
Midian: 18 and ye are risen up against my father's house this day, and have slain his
sons, three-score and ten persons, upon one stone, and have made Abimelech, the son of
his maid-servant, king over the men of Shechem, because he is your brother); 19 if ye
then have dealt truly and uprightly with Jerubbaal and with his house this day, then
rejoice ye in Abimelech, and let him also rejoice in you: 20 but if not, let fire come out
from Abimelech, and devour the men of Shechem, and the house of Millo; and let fire
come out from the men of Shechem, and from the house of Millo, and devour Abimelech.
21 And Jotham ran away, and fled, and went to Beer, and dwelt there, for fear of
Abimelech his brother."
- Jotham had strong insights into what happens when a wicked man makes a
covenant with other wicked men.
- There is a spiritual example of this principle in Jeremiah 5:31. "The prophets
prophesy falsely, and the priests bear rule by their means; and my people love to have
it so: and what will ye do in the end thereof?"
- Jesus said, "Let them alone: they are blind guides. And if the blind guide the blind,
both shall fall into a pit." Matthew 15:14
- The servants of Naaman-- 2 Kings 5:13 "And his servants came near, and spake unto
him, and said, My father, if the prophet had bid thee do some great thing, wouldest thou
not have done it? how much rather then, when he saith to thee, Wash, and be clean?"
- He knew that men should obey the Lord in humility.
- Never was a man more humbled than Paul. 1 Timothy 1:12-17 "I thank him
that enabled me, even Christ Jesus our Lord, for that he counted me faithful,
appointing me to his service; 13 though I was before a blas-phemer, and a persecutor,
and injurious: howbeit I obtained mercy, because I did it ignorantly in unbelief; 14
and the grace of our Lord abounded exceedingly with faith and love which is in
Christ Jesus. 15 Faithful is the saying, and worthy of all acceptation, that Christ
Jesus came into the world to save sinners; of whom I am chief: 16 howbeit for this
cause I obtained mercy, that in me as chief might Jesus Christ show forth all his
longsuffering, for an ensample of them that should thereafter believe on him unto
eternal life. 17 Now unto the King eternal, immortal, invisible, the only God, be
honor and glory forever and ever. Amen."
- King Ahab of Israel-- 1 Kings 20:1-21 "And Ben-hadad the king of Syria gathered all
his host together; and there were thirty and two kings with him, and horses and chariots:
and he went up and besieged Samaria, and fought against it. 2 And he sent messengers
to Ahab king of Israel, into the city, and said unto him, Thus saith Ben-hadad, 3 Thy
silver and thy gold is mine; thy wives also and thy children, even the goodliest, are mine.
4 And the king of Israel answered and said, It is according to thy saying, my lord, O
king; I am thine, and all that I have. 5 And the messengers came again, and said, Thus
speaketh Ben-hadad, saying, I sent indeed unto thee, saying, Thou shalt deliver me thy
silver, and thy gold, and thy wives, and thy children; 6 but I will send my servants unto
thee to-morrow about this time, and they shall search thy house, and the houses of thy
servants; and it shall be, that whatsoever is pleasant in thine eyes, they shall put it in
their hand, and take it away. 7 Then the king of Israel called all the elders of the land, and
said, Mark, I pray you, and see how this man seeketh mischief: for he sent unto me for my
wives, and for my children, and for my silver, and for my gold; and I denied him not. 8
And all the elders and all the people said unto him, Hearken thou not, neither consent. 9
Wherefore he said unto the messengers of Ben-hadad, Tell my lord the king, All that thou
didst send for to thy servant at the first I will do; but this thing I may not do. And the
messengers departed, and brought him word again. 10 And Ben-hadad sent unto him,
and said, The gods do so unto me, and more also, if the dust of Samaria shall suffice for
handfuls for all the people that follow me. 11 And the king of Israel answered and said,
Tell him, Let not him that girdeth on his armor boast himself as he that putteth
it off. 12 And it came to pass, when Ben-hadad heard this message, as he was drinking,
he and the kings, in the pavilions, that he said unto his servants, Set yourselves in array.
And they set themselves in array against the city. 13 And, behold, a prophet came near
unto Ahab king of Israel, and said, Thus saith Jehovah, Hast thou seen all this great
multitude? behold, I will deliver it into thy hand this day; and thou shalt know that I am
Jehovah. 14 And Ahab said, By whom? And he said, Thus saith Jehovah, By the young
men of the princes of the provinces. Then he said, Who shall begin the battle? And he
answered, Thou. 15 Then he mustered the young men of the princes of the provinces,
and they were two hundred and thirty-two: and after them he mustered all the people,
even all the children of Israel, being seven thousand. 16 And they went out at noon. But
Ben-hadad was drinking himself drunk in the pavilions, he and the kings, the thirty and
two kings that helped him. 17 And the young men of the princes of the provinces went
out first; and Ben-hadad sent out, and they told him, saying, There are men come out
from Samaria. 18 And he said, Whether they are come out for peace, take them alive, or
whether they are come out for war, take them alive. 19 So these went out of the city, the
young men of the princes of the provinces, and the army which followed them. 20 And
they slew every one his man; and the Syrians fled, and Israel pursued them: and Ben
hadad the king of Syria escaped on a horse with horsemen. 21 And the king of Israel went
out, and smote the horses and chariots, and slew the Syrians with a great slaughter."
- In the affairs of men, it is unwise to boast, until the job is done. (Even wicked
kings like Ahab may know this.)
- Paul wrote, "Wherefore let him that thinketh he standeth take heed lest he fall." 1
Corinthians 10:12.
- Jesus warned, "Look therefore whether the light that is in thee be not darkness."
Luke 11:35
- CONCLUSION-- Sometimes the wisdom of uninspired men parallels that of God,
but it is not wise to rely solely on "secondary" wisdom, when we can go to God's
Word for wisdom. Romans 3:4 ".....yea, let God be found true, but every man a liar; as it
is written, That thou mightest be justified in thy words, And mightest prevail when thou
comest into judgment."
