Old Fashioned Religion

TEXT: Jeremiah 6:9-16

INTRODUCTION--

  1. I am an old-fashioned person.
    1. When I go hunting, I use my replicas of Antique Muzzle Loaders.
    2. I have thought it would be fun to own a horse and buggy or a Model T.
    3. I like museums, and old tractors, airplanes and cars.
  2. My religion is old-fashioned ("It was good for Paul and Silas, and good enough for me").
    1. The text speaks of returning to the "old paths."
      1. Jeremiah said the people of God "have no delight" in God's Word.
      2. God threatened judgment, and made no adjustment in principle.
      3. The appeal of God to walk in the OLD PATHS (Law of Moses) was rejected.
    2. God does not change to comply with the whims of new generations, but only reaffirms His truth. Psalm 78:1-7 (His "old" commands are always "new". Compare John 13:34 to the re-statement of 1 John 2:7-8.)

LESSON--

  1. For Christians, there is the need to serve in "newness."
    1. Not is the "old letter," but in the "new spirit." Romans 7:6
    2. Yet, some of this newness is a return to ancient precepts. Matthew 19:3-9
    3. Some prefer old to new. Luke 5:39; 2 Corinthians 3:12-16
  2. Though we are charged to keep the New, it is now nearly 2000 years "old."
    1. We are to commit ourselves to these "old paths," because they are ever "New." Hebrews 2:1-4; Galatians 1:6-9
    2. Our failure to do this deserves the same "ancient" condemnation. Jude 3-4; 2 Peter 3:1-7
  3. The OLD PATHS.....
    1. ...do not lead astray.
    2. ...maintain a strict standard of morality and righteousness.
    3. ...are not compatible with the innovations of the application of the Word, or the modern systems of work that are used today (the power is still in the Word!). Many things are acceptable in the church of Christ today that were unknown 75 years ago.

APPLICATION-- We need to reinstate the "old paths" in our hearts, lamenting the tragic consequences that come from leaving them. Lamentations 5:19-21
