WHAT JESUS TAUGHT ABOUT ETHICAL PRIORITIES
TEXT: 1 Thessalonians 5:21-22 "Prove all things; hold fast that which is good;
abstain from every form of evil."
- INTRODUCTION-- Paul's admonition in our text is a challenge similar to the ones
presented by Jesus to His disciples, when their priorities ran contrary to those of
God. The desire of Christ is that we learn to have powers of discernment like His, so
that we keep our priorities straight.
- LESSON--
- Jesus asked Martha to have the same good sense shown by her sister Mary, who
had "chosen the good part". Luke 10:38-42 38 Now as they went on their way, he
entered into a certain village: and a certain woman named Martha received him
into her house. 39 And she had a sister called Mary, who also sat at the Lord's
feet, and heard his word. 40 But Martha was cumbered about much serving; and
she came up to him, and said, Lord, dost thou not care that my sister did leave
me to serve alone? bid her therefore that she help me. 41 But the Lord answered
and said unto her, Martha, Martha, thou art anxious and troubled about many
things: 42 but one thing is needful: for Mary hath chosen the good part, which
shall not be taken away from her.
- In another incident involving Mary, Jesus told His disciples to look for the good
accomplished in her anointing, because they were critical of her "waste." Mark
14:3-9 3 And while he was in Bethany in the house of Simon the leper, as he sat
at meat, there came a woman having an alabaster cruse of ointment of pure
nard very costly; and she brake the cruse, and poured it over his head. 4 But
there were some that had indignation among themselves, saying, To what
purpose hath this waste of the ointment been made? 5 For this ointment might
have been sold for above three hundred shillings, and given to the poor. And
they murmured against her. 6 But Jesus said, Let her alone; why trouble ye her?
she hath wrought a good work on me. 7 For ye have the poor always with you,
and whensoever ye will ye can do them good: but me ye have not always. 8 She
hath done what she could; she hath anointed my body beforehand for the
burying. 9 And verily I say unto you, Wheresoever the gospel shall be preached
throughout the whole world, that also which this woman hath done shall be
spoken of for a memorial of her.
- (Compare the parallel account in John 12:2-8. 2 So they made him a supper
there: and Martha served; but Lazarus was one of them that sat at meat with
him. 3 Mary therefore took a pound of ointment of pure nard, very precious,
and anointed the feet of Jesus, and wiped his feet with her hair: and the house
was filled with the odor of the ointment. 4 But Judas Iscariot, one of his disciples,
that should betray him, saith, 5 Why was not this ointment sold for three
hundred shillings, and given to the poor? 6 Now this he said, not because he
cared for the poor; but because he was a thief, and having the bag took away
what was put therein. 7 Jesus therefore said, Suffer her to keep it against the day
of my burying. 8 For the poor ye have always with you; but me ye have not
always.")
- Peter was rebuked by Jesus for "minding the things of men" in regard to accepting
His prophetic proclamation of His death and resurrection. Matthew 16:21-24 21
From that time began Jesus to show unto his disciples, that he must go unto
Jerusalem, and suffer many things of the elders and chief priests and scribes, and
be killed, and the third day be raised up. 22 And Peter took him, and began to
rebuke him, saying, Be it far from thee, Lord: this shall never be unto thee. 23
But he turned, and said unto Peter, Get thee behind me, Satan: thou art a
stumbling-block unto me: for thou mindest not the things of God, but the things
of men. 24 Then said Jesus unto his disciples, If any man would come after me,
let him deny himself, and take up his cross, and follow me.
- Jesus showed His disciples the greater joy of having their "names written in
heaven," rather than having the extraordinary ability to cast out demons. Luke
10:1, 17-20 1 Now after these things the Lord appointed seventy others, and sent
them two and two before his face into every city and place, whither he himself
was about to come........17 And the seventy returned with joy, saying, Lord, even
the demons are subject unto us in thy name. 18 And he said unto them, I beheld
Satan fallen as lightning from heaven. 19 Behold, I have given you authority to
tread upon serpents and scorpions, and over all the power of the enemy: and
nothing shall in any wise hurt you. 20 Nevertheless in this rejoice not, that the
spirits are subject unto you; but rejoice that your names are written in heaven.
- Jesus corrected the view of His disciples, when He showed the superiority of
gaining eternal life over the possession of wealth. Mark 10:23-31 23 And Jesus
looked round about, and saith unto his disciples, How hardly shall they that
have riches enter into the kingdom of God! 24 And the disciples were amazed at
his words. But Jesus answereth again, and saith unto them, Children, how hard
is it for them that trust in riches to enter into the kingdom of God! 25 It is easier
for a camel to go through a needle's eye, than for a rich man to enter into the
kingdom of God. 26 And they were astonished exceedingly, saying unto him,
Then who can be saved? 27 Jesus looking upon them saith, With men it is
impossible, but not with God: for all things are possible with God. 28 Peter
began to say unto him, Lo, we have left all, and have followed thee. 29 Jesus
said, Verily I say unto you, There is no man that hath left house, or brethren, or
sisters, or mother, or father, or children, or lands, for my sake, and for the
gospel's sake, 30 but he shall receive a hundredfold now in this time, houses, and
brethren, and sisters, and mothers, and children, and lands, with persecutions;
and in the world to come eternal life. 31 But many that are first shall be last; and
the last first.
- Jesus corrected Peter's false assumption regarding the payment of the "half
shekel tax." Matthew 17:24-27 24 And when they were come to Capernaum,
they that received the half-shekel came to Peter, and said, Doth not your teacher
pay the half-shekel? 25 He saith, Yea. And when he came into the house, Jesus
spake first to him, saying, What thinkest thou, Simon? the kings of the earth,
from whom do they receive toll or tribute? from their sons, or from strangers?
26 And when he said, From strangers, Jesus said unto him, Therefore the sons
are free. 27 But, lest we cause them to stumble, go thou to the sea, and cast a
hook, and take up the fish that first cometh up; and when thou hast opened his
mouth, thou shalt find a shekel: that take, and give unto them for me and thee.
(NOTE: Many other examples could be used to illustrate this lesson, and the sum of
them helps us to realize that the Bible was inspired of God. If it had been written by
uninspired men, it would probably not contain the record of so many humiliating
rebukes suffered by the writers.)
- APPLICATION-- When the disciples proposed showing honor for Old Testament
prophets equal to that shown to Jesus, God rebuked them, saying, "This is my
beloved son, in Whom I am well pleased, Hear ye Him" (Luke 9:28-36). We can do no
better than to listen to the ethical teaching of Jesus, "....in whom all the treasures of
wisdom and knowledge are hissden" (Colossians 2:1-3).
Luke 9:28-36 28 And it came to pass about eight days after these sayings, that he took
with him Peter and John and James, and went up into the mountain to pray. 29 And as
he was praying, the fashion of his countenance was altered, and his raiment became
white and dazzling. 30 And behold, there talked with him two men, who were Moses
and Elijah; 31 who appeared in glory, and spake of his decease which he was about to
accomplish at Jerusalem. 32 Now Peter and they that were with him were heavy with
sleep: but when they were fully awake, they saw his glory, and the two men that stood
with him. 33 And it came to pass, as they were parting from him, Peter said unto Jesus,
Master, it is good for us to be here: and let us make three tabernacles; one for thee, and
one for Moses, and one for Elijah: not knowing what he said. 34 And while he said
these things, there came a cloud, and overshadowed them: and they feared as they
entered into the cloud. 35 And a voice came out of the cloud, saying, This is my Son, my
chosen: hear ye him. 36 And when the voice came, Jesus was found alone. And they
held their peace, and told no man in those days any of the things which they had seen.
Colossians 2:1-3 1 For I would have you know how greatly I strive for you, and for
them at Laodicea, and for as many as have not seen my face in the flesh; 2 that their
hearts may be comforted, they being knit together in love, and unto all riches of the full
assurance of understanding, that they may know the mystery of God, even Christ, 3 in
whom are all the treasures of wisdom and knowledge hidden.
