"YOU ARE A SINNER, AND NEED THE WORD"

TEXT-- John 16:7-11

I.INTRODUCTION-- I do not recommend getting in the prospect' face, and charging him as a sinner, but having established the proofs of Bible inspiration, and the exclusive authority of the New Testament, the prospect must now be convicted of sin. If he believes in the Bible, it will convict him.

II. LESSON--
A. Some dangerous attitudes toward sin exist, which need to be corrected.
1. "God will not condemn me." (An attitude which says "there is no God," Psalms 10:4, 6) But, God says, "When they are saying, Peace and safety, then sudden destruction cometh upon them, as travail upon a woman with child; and they shall in no wise escape." 1 Thessalonians 5:3
2. "God doesn't see my sin." (Psalm 10:11) But, God says, "There is no creature that is not manifest in his sight: but all things are naked and laid open before the eyes of him with whom we have to do." Hebrews 4:13
3. "My sin is too small for condemnation." But see and compare the sins in NT "lists." Revelation 21:8, 1 Corinthians 6:9-10, Galatians 5:19-21
B. "The wages of sin is death..." Romans 6:23 (Death as the universal punishment of sin makes it "exceeding sinful." Romans 7:13)
1. "All have sinned, and fall short of the glory of God." Romans 3:23 (and see Romans 3:9, 11:32)
2. "Sin is lawlessness." 1 John 3:4, and "unrighteousness," 1 John 5:17
3. Sin results from our lust. James 1:13-15 (compare 1 John 2:16)
C. The escape from sin and its consequences is through the Word. 1 Peter 1:22-25, James 1:21-22, John 6:44-45, Acts 20:32 (and more)
1. The "gospel" is called the "gospel of grace." Acts 20:24
2. The gospel is facts. 1 Corinthians 15:1-4
3. The gospel instructs. Titus 2:11-12
4. The gospel must be obeyed. 1 Peter 4:17, 2 Thessalonians 1:8
D. The Word must be properly applied.
1. We must obey "ALL" the Word. Matthew 28:18-20
a. We are "foolish" if we are "slow of heart to believe in all that the prophets have spoken." Luke 24:25
b. We should look for teachers like Paul. Acts 20:27
2. We must not "go beyond the Scripture." 1 Corinthians 4:6, 2 John 9-11, Galatians 1:6-9, Revelation 22:18-19
3. Each word of God is essential. Hebrews 2:1-4

III.CONCLUSION-- The prospect that has been made to face his spiritual condition is primed to hear the solution with less reservation, and in simplicity.
