I. INTRODUCTION--
A. Christ gave Paul a method for silencing opponents of truth.
1. Elymas lost interest in obstructing Paul when his sight was gone.
2. Paul's device was miraculous (divine power against false prophets).
3. Preachers would like to have this means of overcoming error, today.
B. But Paul also silenced one who spoke truth! Acts 16:16-18 "And it came to pass, as
we were going to the place of prayer, that a certain maid having a spirit of divination met
us, who brought her masters much gain by soothsaying. 17 The same following after
Paul and us cried out, saying, These men are servants of the Most High God, who
proclaim unto you the way of salvation. 18 And this she did for many days. But Paul,
being sore troubled, turned and said to the spirit, I charge thee in the name of Jesus
Christ to come out of her. And it came out that very hour."
1. The testimony of an evil spirit is not welcome to servants of the Lord, any
more than it is to the Lord, himself. Luke 4:40-41 "And when the sun was
setting, all they that had any sick with divers diseases brought them unto him; and he
laid his hands on every one of them, and healed them. 41 And demons also came out
from many, crying out, and saying, Thou art the Son of God. And rebuking them, he
suffered them not to speak, because they knew that he was the Christ."
2.What is the difference between the case of Acts 16 and Philippians 1:15-18?
"Some indeed preach Christ even of envy and strife; and some also of good will: 16
the one do it of love, knowing that I am set for the defence of the gospel; 17 but the
other proclaim Christ of faction, not sincerely, thinking to raise up affliction for me in
my bonds. 18 What then? only that in every way, whether in pretence or in truth,
Christ is proclaimed; and therein I rejoice, yea, and will rejoice." (answer: The
soothsaying girl was not able to make a free choice, but the men in Philippians
1 could, so Paul allowed them to speak truth, though insincerely.)
I. LESSON-- If we no longer have the miraculous method of silencing those who teach error (1 Corinthinans 13:8), what devices are left to us?
A. PROHIBITIVE, "Reprove them..." Titus 1:10-14 "For there are many unruly men,
vain talkers and deceivers, specially they of the circumcision, 11 whose mouths must be
stopped; men who overthrow whole houses, teaching things which they ought not, for
filthy lucre's sake. 12 One of themselves, a prophet of their own, said, Cretans are always
liars, evil beasts, idle gluttons. 13 This testimony is true. For which cause reprove them
sharply, that they may be sound in the faith, 14 not giving heed to Jewish fables, and
commandments of men who turn away from the truth."
B. PREVENTIVE, "Charge them..."
1.1 Timothy 1:3-4 "As I exhorted thee to tarry at Ephesus, when I was going into
Macedonia, that thou mightest charge certain men not to teach a different doctrine, 4
neither to give heed to fables and endless genealogies, which minister questionings,
rather than a dispensation of God which is in faith; so do I now."
2.1 Timothy 4:1-6 "But the Spirit saith expressly, that in later times some shall fall
away from the faith, giving heed to seducing spirits and doctrines of demons, 2
through the hypocrisy of men that speak lies, branded in their own conscience as
with a hot iron; 3 forbidding to marry, and commanding to abstain from meats, which
God created to be received with thanksgiving by them that believe and know the
truth. 4 For every creature of God is good, and nothing is to be rejected, if it be
received with thanksgiving: 5 for it is sanctified through the word of God and prayer.
6 If thou put the brethren in mind of these things, thou shalt be a good minister of
Christ Jesus, nourished in the words of the faith, and of the good doctrine which thou
hast followed until now:"
3.2 Timothy 2:14 "Of these things put them in remembrance, charging them in the
sight of the Lord, that they strive not about words, to no profit, to the subverting of
them that hear."
C. POSITIVE, "Preach to them..." 2 Timothy 4:1-4 "I charge thee in the sight of God, and
of Christ Jesus, who shall judge the living and the dead, and by his appearing and his
kingdom: 2 preach the word; be urgent in season, out of season; reprove, rebuke, exhort,
with all longsuffering and teaching. 3 For the time will come when they will not endure
the sound doctrine; but, having itching ears, will heap to themselves teachers after their
own lusts; 4 and will turn away their ears from the truth, and turn aside unto fables."
(The church should concentrate on increasing this--more publications, more
radio,more personal evangelism.)
1. Truth is often provocative.
a. Makes some angry. Acts 7:51-60 "Ye stiffnecked and uncircumcised in heart
and ears, ye do always resist the Holy Spirit: as your fathers did, so do ye. 52
Which of the prophets did not your fathers persecute? and they killed them that
showed before of the coming of the Righteous One; of whom ye have now become
betrayers and murderers; 53 ye who received the law as it was ordained by
angels, and kept it not. 54 Now when they heard these things, they were cut to
the heart, and they gnashed on him with their teeth. 55 But he, being full of the
Holy Spirit, looked up stedfastly into heaven, and saw the glory of God, and Jesus
standing on the right hand of God, 56 and said, Behold, I see the heavens opened,
and the Son of Man standing on the right hand of God. 57 But they cried out
with a loud voice, and stopped their ears, and rushed upon him with one accord;
58 and they cast him out of the city, and stoned him: and the witnesses laid down
their garments at the feet of a young man named Saul. 59 And they stoned
Stephen, calling upon the Lord, and saying, Lord Jesus, receive my spirit. 60
And he kneeled down, and cried with a loud voice, Lord, lay not this sin to their
charge. And when he had said this, he fell asleep."
b. It offends. Matthew 15:1-3, 10-14 "Then there come to Jesus from Jerusalem
Pharisees and scribes, saying, 2 Why do thy disciples transgress the tradition of
the elders? for they wash not their hands when they eat bread. 3 And he
answered and said unto them, Why do ye also transgress the commandment of
God because of your tradition? ........... 10 And he called to him the multitude, and
said unto them, Hear, and understand: 11 Not that which entereth into the
mouth defileth the man; but that which proceedeth out of the mouth, this defileth
the man. 12 Then came the disciples, and said unto him, Knowest thou that the
Pharisees were offended, when they heard this saying? 13 But he answered and
said, Every plant which my heavenly Father planted not, shall be rooted up. 14
Let them alone: they are blind guides. And if the blind guide the blind, both shall
fall into a pit."
c. It makes enemies. Galatians 4:16 (After Paul had rebuked their error, he
said) "So then am I become your enemy, by telling you the truth?"
2. But only Christ has the "Words of eternal life." John 6:66-69 "Upon this many of
his disciples went back, and walked no more with him. 67 Jesus said therefore unto
the twelve, Would ye also go away? 68 Simon Peter answered him, Lord, to whom
shall we go? thou hast the words of eternal life. 69 And we have believed and know
that thou art the Holy One of God."
III. CONCLUSION AND APPEAL-- Error is our mortal enemy. It must be destroyed!
