WERE YOU THERE WHEN THEY CRUCIFIED MY LORD?
TEXTS:
Psalms 22:6-8 But I am a worm and not a man, A reproach of men and despised by the
people. 7 All who see me sneer at me; They separate with the lip, they wag the head, saying, 8
"Commit yourself to the LORD; let Him deliver him; Let Him rescue him, because He delights
in him."
Matthew 27:39-44 And those passing by were hurling abuse at Him, wagging their heads
40 and saying, "You who are going to destroy the temple and rebuild it in three days, save
Yourself! If You are the Son of God, come down from the cross." 41 In the same way the chief
priests also, along with the scribes and elders, were mocking Him and saying, 42 "He saved
others; He cannot save Himself. He is the King of Israel; let Him now come down from the cross,
and we will believe in Him. 43 "HE TRUSTS IN GOD; LET GOD RESCUE Him now, IF HE
DELIGHTS IN HIM; for He said, 'I am the Son of God.'" 44 The robbers who had been
crucified with Him were also insulting Him with the same words.
- INTRODUCTION--
- David's prophecy of the crucifixion of Christ was fulfilled in all its details, but the
scene around the cross is not complete without examining the audience.
- Are any of us represented in one or more of the people who were involved in
the events of the cross? Like the theme of the old spiritual, "Were you there
when they crucified my Lord?"
- LESSON--
- Judas-- He was certainly a complex villain, most often denounced as a traitor in a
multitude of sermons, but also a greedy man.
- Character-- John 12:1-8 Jesus, therefore, six days before the Passover, came to
Bethany where Lazarus was, whom Jesus had raised from the dead. 2 So they made
Him a supper there, and Martha was serving; but Lazarus was one of those reclining
at the table with Him. 3 Mary then took a pound of very costly perfume of pure nard,
and anointed the feet of Jesus and wiped His feet with her hair; and the house was
filled with the fragrance of the perfume. 4 But Judas Iscariot, one of His disciples, who
was intending to betray Him, said, 5 "Why was this perfume not sold for three
hundred denarii and given to poor people?" 6 Now he said this, not because he was
concerned about the poor, but because he was a thief, and as he had the money box,
he used to pilfer what was put into it. 7 Therefore Jesus said, "Let her alone, so that
she may keep it for the day of My burial. 8 For you always have the poor with you,
but you do not always have Me."
- Outcome-- Matthew 27:3-5 Then when Judas, who had betrayed Him, saw that He
had been condemned, he felt remorse and returned the thirty pieces of silver to the
chief priests and elders, 4 saying, "I have sinned by betraying innocent blood." But
they said, "What is that to us? See to that yourself!" 5 And he threw the pieces of
silver into the temple sanctuary and departed; and he went away and hanged himself.
6 The chief priests took the pieces of silver and said, "It is not lawful to put them into
the temple treasury, since it is the price of blood." 7 And they conferred together and
with the money bought the Potter's Field as a burial place for strangers. (Compare
Acts 1:18 "Now this man acquired a field with the price of his wickedness...." This
fulfilled Zechariah 11:12-13.)
- The Priests-- Pontius Pilate perceived that "for envy they delivered Him."
- Character-- John 11:47-53 (Some who had seen Jesus raise Lazarus) went to
the Pharisees and told them the things which Jesus had done. Therefore the chief
priests and the Pharisees convened a council, and were saying, "What are we doing?
For this man is performing many signs. 48 "If we let Him go on like this, all men will
believe in Him, and the Romans will come and take away both our place and our
nation." 49 But one of them, Caiaphas, who was high priest that year, said to them,
"You know nothing at all, 50 nor do you take into account that it is expedient for you
that one man die for the people, and that the whole nation not perish." 51 Now he did
not say this on his own initiative, but being high priest that year, he prophesied that
Jesus was going to die for the nation, 52 and not for the nation only, but in order that
He might also gather together into one the children of God who are scattered abroad.
53 So from that day on they planned together to kill Him.
- Outcome-- Matthew 27:15-18, 21-23 Now at the feast the governor was accustomed to release for the people any one prisoner whom they wanted. 16 At that time
they were holding a notorious prisoner, called Barabbas. 17 So when the people
gathered together, Pilate said to them, "Whom do you want me to release for you?
Barabbas, or Jesus who is called Christ?" 18 For he knew that because of envy they
had handed Him over...........21 But the governor said to them, "Which of the two do
you want me to release for you?" And they said, "Barabbas." 22 Pilate *said to them,
"Then what shall I do with Jesus who is called Christ?" They all *said, "Crucify
Him!" 23 And he said, "Why, what evil has He done?" But they kept shouting all the
more, saying, "Crucify Him!"
- Pontius Pilate--- We see him as a compromising politician, and corrupt.
- Character-- John 19:4-16 Pilate came out again and *said to them, "Behold, I am
bringing Him out to you so that you may know that I find no guilt in Him." 5 Jesus
then came out, wearing the crown of thorns and the purple robe. Pilate said to them,
"Behold, the Man!" 6 So when the chief priests and the officers saw Him, they cried
out saying, "Crucify, crucify!" Pilate said to them, "Take Him yourselves and crucify
Him, for I find no guilt in Him." 7 The Jews answered him, "We have a law, and by
that law He ought to die because He made Himself out to be the Son of God." 8
Therefore when Pilate heard this statement, he was even more afraid; 9 and he
entered into the Praetorium again and said to Jesus, "Where are You from?" But
Jesus gave him no answer. 10 So Pilate said to Him, "You do not speak to me? Do
You not know that I have authority to release You, and I have authority to crucify
You?" 11 Jesus answered, "You would have no authority over Me, unless it had
been given you from above; for this reason he who delivered Me to you has the
greater sin." 12 As a result of this Pilate made efforts to release Him, but the Jews
cried out saying, "If you release this Man, you are no friend of Caesar; everyone who
makes himself out to be a king opposes Caesar." 13 Therefore when Pilate heard these
words, he brought Jesus out, and sat down on the judgment seat at a place called The
Pavement, but in Hebrew, Gabbatha. 14 Now it was the day of preparation for the
Passover; it was about the sixth hour. And he said to the Jews, "Behold, your King!"
15 So they cried out, "Away with Him, away with Him, crucify Him!" Pilate said to
them, "Shall I crucify your King?" The chief priests answered, "We have no king but
Caesar." 16 So he then handed Him over to them to be crucified.
- Outcome-- Matthew 27:24-26 When Pilate saw that he was accomplishing
nothing, but rather that a riot was starting, he took water and washed his hands in
front of the crowd, saying, "I am innocent of this Man's blood; see to that yourselves." 25 And all the people said, "His blood shall be on us and on our children!"
26 Then he released Barabbas for them; but after having Jesus scourged, he handed
Him over to be crucified.
- The Soldiers--- Hard cases, trained to deal with death, yet impressionable.
- Character-- Matthew 27:27-31 Then the soldiers of the governor took Jesus into
the Praetorium and gathered the whole Roman cohort around Him. 28 They stripped
Him and put a scarlet robe on Him. 29 And after twisting together a crown of
thorns, they put it on His head, and a reed in His right hand; and they knelt down
before Him and mocked Him, saying, "Hail, King of the Jews!" 30 They spat on Him,
and took the reed and began to beat Him on the head. 31 After they had mocked Him,
they took the scarlet robe off Him and put His own garments back on Him, and led
Him away to crucify Him.
- Outcome-- Matthew 27:50-54 And Jesus cried out again with a loud voice, and
yielded up His spirit. 51 And behold, the veil of the temple was torn in two from top
to bottom; and the earth shook and the rocks were split. 52 The tombs were opened,
and many bodies of the saints who had fallen asleep were raised; 53 and coming out of
the tombs after His resurrection they entered the holy city and appeared to many. 54
Now the centurion, and those who were with him keeping guard over Jesus, when
they saw the earthquake and the things that were happening, became very frightened
and said, "Truly this was the Son of God!"
- The Thieves-- Self-confessed criminals, but one had a change of heart.
- Character-- Matthew 27:44 The robbers who had been crucified with Him were
also insulting Him with the same words.
- Outcome-- Luke 23:39-43 One of the criminals who were hanged there was
hurling abuse at Him, saying, "Are You not the Christ? Save Yourself and us!" 40
But the other answered, and rebuking him said, "Do you not even fear God, since
you are under the same sentence of condemnation? 41 "And we indeed are suffering
justly, for we are receiving what we deserve for our deeds; but this man has done
nothing wrong." 42 And he was saying, "Jesus, remember me when You come in
Your kingdom!" 43 And He said to him, "Truly I say to you, today you shall be with
Me in Paradise."
- Sympathetic Rulers-- (Joseph and Nicodemus)--Secret disciples until moved by
the death of Christ to come into the open.
- Character--
- Nicodemus--
- John 3:1-10 Now there was a man of the Pharisees, named Nicodemus, a
ruler of the Jews; 2 this man came to Jesus by night and said to Him, "Rabbi,
we know that You have come from God as a teacher; for no one can do these
signs that You do unless God is with him." 3 Jesus answered and said to him,
"Truly, truly, I say to you, unless one is born again he cannot see the
kingdom of God." 4 Nicodemus *said to Him, "How can a man be born when
he is old? He cannot enter a second time into his mother's womb and be born,
can he?" 5 Jesus answered, "Truly, truly, I say to you, unless one is born of
water and the Spirit he cannot enter into the kingdom of God. 6 "That which
is born of the flesh is flesh, and that which is born of the Spirit is spirit. 7 "Do
not be amazed that I said to you, 'You must be born again.' 8 "The wind
blows where it wishes and you hear the sound of it, but do not know where it
comes from and where it is going; so is everyone who is born of the Spirit." 9
Nico-demus said to Him, "How can these things be?" 10 Jesus answered and
said to him, "Are you the teacher of Israel and do not understand these
things?
- John 7:45-52 The officers then came to the chief priests and Pharisees, and
they said to them, "Why did you not bring Him?" 46 The officers answered,
"Never has a man spoken the way this man speaks." 47 The Pharisees then
answered them, "You have not also been led astray, have you? 48 "No one of
the rulers or Pharisees has believed in Him, has he? 49 "But this crowd
which does not know the Law is accursed." 50 Nicodemus (he who came to
Him before, being one of them) said to them, 51 "Our Law does not judge a
man unless it first hears from him and knows what he is doing, does it?" 52
They answered him, "You are not also from Galilee, are you? Search, and see
that no prophet arises out of Galilee."
- Joseph--
- Luke 23:50-51 And a man named Joseph, who was a member of the Council,
a good and righteous man 51 (he had not consented to their plan and action),
a man from Arimathea, a city of the Jews, who was waiting for the kingdom of
God; 52 this man went to Pilate and asked for the body of Jesus.
- Outcome-- John 19:38-42 After these things Joseph of Arimathea, being a disciple
of Jesus, but a secret one for fear of the Jews, asked Pilate that he might take away the
body of Jesus; and Pilate granted permission. So he came and took away His body.
Nicodemus, who had first come to Him by night, also came, bringing a mixture of
myrrh and aloes, about a hundred pounds weight. 40 So they took the body of Jesus
and bound it in linen wrappings with the spices, as is the burial custom of the Jews.
41 Now in the place where He was crucified there was a garden, and in the garden a
new tomb in which no one had yet been laid. 42 Therefore because of the Jewish day
of preparation, since the tomb was nearby, they laid Jesus there.
- The Disciples--- Closest to Jesus, but also fearful and confused.
- Character-- Matthew 26:55-56 At that time Jesus said to the crowds, "Have you
come out with swords and clubs to arrest Me as you would against a robber? Every
day I used to sit in the temple teaching and you did not seize Me. 56 "But all this has
taken place to fulfill the Scriptures of the prophets." Then all the disciples left Him
and fled.
- Outcome--
- Peter-- Matthew 26:58, 69-75 But Peter was following Him at a distance as far
as the courtyard of the high priest, and entered in, and sat down with the officers
to see the outcome.......69 Now Peter was sitting outside in the courtyard, and a
servant-girl came to him and said, "You too were with Jesus the Galilean." 70
But he denied it before them all, saying, "I do not know what you are talking
about." 71 When he had gone out to the gateway, another servant-girl saw him
and *said to those who were there, "This man was with Jesus of Nazareth." 72
And again he denied it with an oath, "I do not know the man." 73 A little later
the bystanders came up and said to Peter, "Surely you too are one of them; for
even the way you talk gives you away." 74 Then he began to curse and swear, "I
do not know the man!" And immediately a rooster crowed. 75 And Peter
remembered the word which Jesus had said, "Before a rooster crows, you will
deny Me three times." And he went out and wept bitterly.
- John-- John 19:25-27 But standing by the cross of Jesus were His mo-ther, and
His mother's sister, Mary the wife of Clopas, and Mary Mag-dalene. 26 When
Jesus then saw His mother, and the disciple whom He loved standing nearby, He
said to His mother, "Woman, behold, your son!" 27 Then He said to the disciple,
"Behold, your mother!" From that hour the disciple took her into his own
household.
- All-- John 20:19-20 So when it was evening on that day, the first day of the
week, and when the doors were shut where the disciples were, for fear of the
Jews, Jesus came and stood in their midst and said to them, "Peace be with you."
20 And when He had said this, He showed them both His hands and His side.
The disciples then rejoiced when they saw the Lord.
- The Multitude-- Vacillating, but later many repented and were saved.
- Character--
- At first, they honored Jesus. Matthew 21:8-11 Most of the crowd spread their
coats in the road, and others were cutting branches from the trees and spreading
them in the road. 9 The crowds going ahead of Him, and those who followed, were
shouting, "Hosanna to the Son of David; BLESSED IS HE WHO COMES IN
THE NAME OF THE LORD; Hosanna in the highest!" 10 When He had entered
Jerusalem, all the city was stirred, saying, "Who is this?" 11 And the crowds
were saying, "This is the prophet Jesus, from Nazareth in Galilee."
- Later, they asked for His death. Matthew 27:20-22 But the chief priests and
the elders persuaded the crowds to ask for Barabbas and to put Jesus to death. 21
But the governor said to them, "Which of the two do you want me to release for
you?" And they said, "Barabbas." 22 Pilate *said to them, "Then what shall I do
with Jesus who is called Christ?" They all *said, "Crucify Him!"
- Outcome---
- Acts 2:22-23 "Men of Israel, listen to these words: Jesus the Nazarene, a man
attested to you by God with miracles and wonders and signs which God
performed through Him in your midst, just as you yourselves know-- 23 this
Man, delivered over by the predetermined plan and foreknowledge of God, you
nailed to a cross by the hands of godless men and put Him to death.
- Acts 2:36-41 "Therefore let all the house of Israel know for certain that God has
made Him both Lord and Christ--this Jesus whom you cruci-fied." 37 Now when
they heard this, they were pierced to the heart, and said to Peter and the rest of
the apostles, "Brethren, what shall we do?" 38 Peter said to them, "Repent, and
each of you be baptized in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your
sins; and you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit. 39 For the promise is for you
and your children and for all who are far off, as many as the Lord our God will call
to Himself." 40 And with many other words he solemnly testified and kept on
exhorting them, saying, "Be saved from this perverse generation!" 41 So then,
those who had received his word were baptized; and that day there were added
about three thousand souls.
- Acts 3:13-14, 19 "The God of Abraham, Isaac and Jacob, the God of our fathers,
has glorified His servant Jesus, the one whom you delivered and disowned in the
presence of Pilate, when he had decided to release Him. 14 "But you disowned the
Holy and Righteous One and asked for a murderer to be granted to you.....
"Therefore repent and return, so that your sins may be wiped away, in order that
times of refreshing may come from the presence of the Lord. (Acts 4:4 says that
many believed.)
- APPLICATION-- Of all these characters, which would you prefer to be? Does it
matter, all of them received the benediction of Christ, "Father, forgive them, for they
know not what they do."
