"WHATSOEVER"
- INTRODUCTION-- Colossians 3:17 "And whatsoever ye do in word or in deed, do all in
the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through Him."
- What is the definition of the word, WHATSOEVER?
- It is a more formal or intensive form of WHATEVER.
- WHATEVER-- Anything or everything. (Tell of "generic greeting card.")
- As applied to Colossians 3:17, it means every word and deed, no exclusions.
- This verse starts with "and," so we need to read verse 16, "Let the word of
Christ dwell in you richly; in all wisdom teaching and admonishing one another with
psalms and hymns, and spiritual songs, singing with grace in you hearts unto God."
- Thus, applying the instruction of Vs. 17, we must do these things "in the name
of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God," since these things all fall under the
heading, "whatsoever."
- LESSON--
- Jesus required that under His authority, all things He taught must be observed.
Matthew 28:18-20
- Moses' prophecy of Deuteronomy 18:15-19 asserts this. Acts 3:22-23
- The mother of Jesus uses this word to show that we must obey even an
implausible command of Jesus. John 2:5
- If the instruction of God is involved, the source must be respected. Matthew
23:3, Romans 15:4
- If our response to "whatsoever" we are taught is obedient, we can pray for
"whatsoever," believing, and we will receive it.
- This promise first given to the Apostles. John 15:16
- A similar promise made to all believers. 1 John 3:21-22, 5:14-15
- The principle of "whatsoever" figures prominently in Christian life.
- All the things we "sow." Galatians 6:7-8
- All good works. Ephesians 6:8
- All good thoughts. Philippians 4:8
- All human relationships. Matthew 7:12
- "Whatsoever ye do"-- See and appreciate the purpose.
- Honor to the Son. Colossians 3:17
- Glory to God. 1 Corinthians 10:31
- Diligent service. Colossians 3:23
