GLORIFYING GOD IN GOOD WORKS
- INTRODUCTION--
- We have a command of Christ to bring glory to God. Matthew 5:14-16 "Ye are
the light of the world. A city set on a hill cannot be hid. 15 Neither do men light a lamp,
and put it under the bushel, but on the stand; and it shineth unto all that are in the
house. 16 Even so let your light shine before men; that they may see your good works,
and glorify your Father who is in heaven."
- This reading is from the ASV, and says, "Even so let your light shine." (The
word "so" here has the same meaning in the Greek, and should be understood as "in this manner.") This is the proper meaning.
- The KJV reads, "Let your light so shine," and the word "so" in this phrasing
leads some to think it means, "Let your light shine very much."
- Matthew 6:1-2 seems to contradict this command, but is only making a distinction about the purpose of good works. It says, "Take heed that ye do not your
righteousness before men, to be seen of them: else ye have no reward with your Father
who is in heaven. 2 When therefore thou doest alms, sound not a trumpet before thee, as
the hypocrites do in the synagogues and in the streets, that they may have glory of men.
Verily I say unto you, They have received their reward."
- Yet, it is possible to receive "thanks" from someone who also "gives glory to
God." Luke 17:11-19 "And it came to pass, as they were on their way to Jerusalem, that
he was passing along the borders of Samaria and Galilee. 12 And as he entered into a
certain village, there met him ten men that were lepers, who stood afar off: 13 and they
lifted up their voices, saying, Jesus, Master, have mercy on us. 14 And when he saw
them, he said unto them, Go and show yourselves unto the priests. And it came to pass,
as they went, they were cleansed. 15 And one of them, when he saw that he was healed,
turned back, with a loud voice glorifying God; 16 and he fell upon his face at his feet,
giving him thanks: and he was a Samaritan. 17 And Jesus answering said, Were not the
ten cleansed? but where are the nine? 18 Were there none found that returned to give
glory to God, save this stranger? 19 And he said unto him, Arise, and go thy way: thy
faith hath made thee whole."
- LESSON-- Can we learn the trick of causing those who see our good works to
glorify God rather than ourselves?
- Jesus had the knack of doing good in ways that caused others to glorify God.
- Matthew 9:2-8 "And behold, they brought to him a man sick of the palsy, lying on a
bed: and Jesus seeing their faith said unto the sick of the palsy, Son, be of good cheer;
thy sins are forgiven. 3 And behold, certain of the scribes said within themselves,
This man blasphemeth. 4 And Jesus knowing their thoughts said, Wherefore think ye
evil in your hearts? 5 For which is easier, to say, Thy sins are forgiven; or to say,
Arise, and walk? 6 But that ye may know that the Son of man hath authority on earth
to forgive sins (then saith he to the sick of the palsy), Arise, and take up thy bed, and
go up unto thy house. 7 And he arose, and departed to his house. 8 But when the
multitudes saw it, they were afraid, and glorified God, who had given such authority
unto men."
- Luke 7:11-16 "And it came to pass soon afterwards, that he went to a city called
Nain; and his disciples went with him, and a great multitude. 12 Now when he drew
near to the gate of the city, behold, there was carried out one that was dead, the only
son of his mother, and she was a widow: and much people of the city was with her. 13
And when the Lord saw her, he had compassion on her, and said unto her, Weep not.
14 And he came nigh and touched the bier: and the bearers stood still. And he said,
Young man, I say unto thee, Arise. 15 And he that was dead sat up, and began to
speak. And he gave him to his mother. 16 And fear took hold on all: and they glorified
God, saying, A great prophet is arisen among us: and, God hath visited his people."
- Luke 13:10-13 "And he was teaching in one of the synagogues on the sabbath day.
11 And behold, a woman that had a spirit of infirmity eighteen years; and she was
bowed together, and could in no wise lift herself up. 12 And when Jesus saw her, he
called her, and said to her, Woman, thou art loosed from thine infirmity. 13 And he
laid his hands upon her: and immediately she was made straight, and glorified God."
- Peter and John showed a way to do a good work that would cause men to
glorify God. Acts 3:1-8 "Now Peter and John were going up into the temple at the hour
of prayer, being the ninth hour. 2 And a certain man that was lame from his mother's
womb was carried, whom they laid daily at the door of the temple which is called
Beautiful, to ask alms of them that entered into the temple; 3 who seeing Peter and John
about to go into the temple, asked to receive an alms. 4 And Peter, fastening his eyes
upon him, with John, said, Look on us. 5 And he gave heed unto them, expecting to
receive something from them. 6 But Peter said, Silver and gold have I none; but what I
have, that give I thee. In the name of Jesus Christ of Nazareth, walk. 7 And he took him
by the right hand, and raised him up: and immediately his feet and his ankle-bones
received strength. 8 And leaping up, he stood, and began to walk; and he entered with
them into the temple, walking, and leaping, and praising God."
- The Apostles pointed away from themselves to the real source of divine
power. Acts 3:11-16 "And as he held Peter and John, all the people ran together
unto them in the porch that is called Solomon's, greatly wondering. 12 And when
Peter saw it, he answered unto the people, Ye men of Israel, why marvel ye at this
man? or why fasten ye your eyes on us, as though by our own power or godliness we
had made him to walk? 13 The God of Abraham, and of Isaac, and of Jacob, the God of
our fathers, hath glorified his Servant Jesus; whom ye delivered up, and denied before
the face of Pilate, when he had determined to release him. 14 But ye denied the Holy
and Righteous One, and asked for a murderer to be granted unto you, 15 and killed
the Prince of life; whom God raised from the dead; whereof we are witnesses. 16 And
by faith in his name hath his name made this man strong, whom ye behold and know:
yea, the faith which is through him hath given him this perfect soundness in the
presence of you all."
- The result: glorification of God. Acts 4:18-22 "And they (the Sanhedrin court)
called them, and charged them not to speak at all nor teach in the name of Jesus. 19
But Peter and John answered and said unto them, Whether it is right in the sight of
God to hearken unto you rather than unto God, judge ye: 20 for we cannot but speak
the things which we saw and heard. 21 And they, when they had further threatened
them, let them go, finding nothing how they might punish them, because of the
people; for all men glorified God for that which was done. 22 For the man was more
than forty years old, on whom this miracle of healing was wrought."
- The works of Christ and the Apostles were miraculous, but we can follow their
example, even when we do non-miraculous works.
- The work of the Corinthians in helping the poor in Jerusalem brought Glory
to the Lord. 2 Corinthians 8:16-19 "But thanks be to God, who putteth the same
earnest care for you into the heart of Titus. 17 For he accepted indeed our exhortation; but being himself very earnest, he went forth unto you of his own accord. 18
And we have sent together with him the brother whose praise in the gospel is spread
through all the churches; 19 and not only so, but who was also appointed by the
churches to travel with us in the matter of this grace, which is ministered by us to
the glory of the Lord, and to show our readiness:"
- Those who received the help glorified God. 2 Corinthians 9:12-13 "For the
ministration of this service not only filleth up the measure of the wants of the saints,
but aboundeth also through many thanksgivings unto God; 13 seeing that through
the proving of you by this ministration they glorify God for the obedience of your
confession unto the gospel of Christ, and for the liberality of your contribution unto
them and unto all;"
- CONCLUSION-- The key, then, is doing all things "in the name of Christ."
- Colossians 3:17 "And whatsoever ye do, in word or in deed, do all in the name of the
Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through him."
- 1 Peter 4:10-11 "...according as each hath received a gift, ministering it among
yourselves, as good stewards of the manifold grace of God; 11 if any man speaketh,
speaking as it were oracles of God; is any man ministereth, ministering as of the strength
which God supplieth: that in all things God may be glorified through Jesus Christ, whose
is the glory and the dominion for ever and ever. Amen."
